We’ve heard of zebra muscles, Asian beetles, Buckthorn.. But now add a specific species of worm to the list of destructive invaders.

Coming from Asia, the “jumping worm” is particularly troublesome because of their plant root-eating tendencies. These worms are named for their unusual aggressive behavior, appearing to be jumping when disturbed. On top of eating plant roots, they are destructive to the top 2 inches of soil, leaving behind what looks like coffee grounds or cat litter.

The Minnesota DNR is warning residents of the aggressive worm, asking us to notify the Department of Natural Resources if we believe to have found the jumping worms.

The “jumping worm” has been in Minnesota since 2006 – but are just now starting to become a more prevalent issue.
